Henrikh Mkhitaryan reflects on Inter Milan’s Supercoppa Italiana semi-final defeat against Bologna

It was a bitter evening for Inter Milan, who were eliminated from the Supercoppa Italiana 2025/26 on penalties.

Despite a strong overall performance, the Nerazzurri were held to a 1–1 draw by Bologna after 90 minutes and then beaten in the penalty shootout.

From dominance to disappointment: Inter Milan pay for missed chances

Inter Milan created numerous chances during the match but were unable to make the difference before the final series of spot-kicks, which ultimately favored the Rossoblù.

At the end of the match, Henrikh Mkhitaryan analyzed the performance against Bologna:

“We should have finished it earlier. Once it goes to penalties, it becomes a different story. The whole team played well apart from the penalties. In the second half, we dominated the match and created a lot. If you don’t manage to finish your chances, you pay for it in football.

We’re sorry about the result. We need to work on closing games as early as possible because when you create so much, you should put the match to bed sooner.

We also have to believe that we can win games even when we concede or go through difficult moments.

Bologna were here on merit after winning the Coppa Italia. We tried to win and we didn’t manage to do it, that’s football. There’s no need for excuses or justifications. We have a lot of work ahead of us for everything that’s coming.

It hurts, it’s a big disappointment, but we’re aware of what we need to do. We’ll work harder to reach our objectives. We have to forget this match, even though there’s disappointment. Now we think about Atalanta: it’s a different competition, and we need points to keep moving forward.”
