Five centre-backs, zero guarantees: Inter Milan face a summer of defensive decisions and potential reshuffles

Uncertainty hangs over Inter Milan’s defensive line like a storm cloud that refuses to pass. 

According to Tuttosport via Fcinter1908, none of the club’s five central defenders are fully guaranteed to remain next season, though the likelihood varies sharply from player to player.

Akanji almost certain to stay

Manuel Akanji has largely convinced since arriving from Manchester City. More comfortable as a central figure than on the right side of the back three, he has become a key piece in the system.

Inter Milan are expected to sign him permanently regardless of contractual clauses tied to a potential title win. While not mathematically certain, his stay is as close to guaranteed as it gets.

End of an era for Acerbi and De Vrij

The outlook is far less optimistic for Stefan de Vrij and Francesco Acerbi.

Both veterans, long considered pillars under Simone Inzaghi, have gradually faded from prominence under Cristian Chivu. 

The tactical shift has seen Akanji move centrally, opening space on the right for the physically imposing Yann Bisseck.

De Vrij had already considered leaving in January in search of regular playing time ahead of international commitments, with links to Al-Hilal.

A return to his home country or a new adventure abroad now feels increasingly likely.

A similar path could await Acerbi, who had also opened the door to a move earlier this year. At this stage of his career, the summer will be decisive in shaping his next step.

Bastoni and Bisseck: future cornerstones or big sales?

The most delicate situations involve Alessandro Bastoni and Yann Bisseck, both seen as key components of Chivu’s evolving system.

Bisseck, already on the radar of Premier League clubs last summer, has seen his value rise significantly. 

Inter Milan are even exploring a contract extension, signaling their intention to build around him. Any departure would require a major offer.

Bastoni’s case is more nuanced. A guaranteed starter on paper, his situation has become more complex following recent tensions, particularly after a high-profile clash against Juventus.

Interest from elite clubs like Barcelona could test Inter Milan’s resolve. A significant bid could force the club into a broader tactical rethink, potentially even shifting from a back three to a four-man defence.
