Inter Milan continue to work on strengthening their defence ahead of the new season, with sporting director Piero Ausilio evaluating several options to provide Cristian Chivu with additional quality at the back.

While Trevoh Chalobah remains the club's preferred target, the Nerazzurri are keeping alternative solutions open as they look to add both an experienced defender ready to contribute immediately and a younger player with long-term potential.

Chalobah leads the shortlist

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah remains Inter Milan's first choice.

The English centre-back is appreciated for his versatility, physical presence and experience in the Premier League, qualities that fit perfectly with Chivu's tactical plans.

However, Inter Milan are also considering other experienced defenders should negotiations for Chalobah become too complicated.

One of those names is David Alaba. The 34-year-old Austria international has reportedly been offered to the club in recent weeks after becoming available on the market.

Alaba's leadership, winning mentality and ability to play both as a centre-back and left-back make him an intriguing option, although his wages could prove to be a significant obstacle.

Lucumí also remains on Inter Milan's radar

The Colombian international currently has a €28 million release clause (approximately $33 million) that remains valid until July 15.

After that date, Bologna are expected to negotiate directly with interested clubs, although reports suggest the Serie A side would still seek at least €25 million (approximately $29.5 million).

Inter Milan are carefully monitoring the situation, hoping the expiration of the clause could create room for a more favourable agreement.

Competition, however, is expected to be fierce. Juventus have also been following Lucumí, although the Bianconeri currently consider the defender's valuation too high.

If both Italian giants pursue the Colombian later in the summer, the transfer battle could become one of the most interesting stories of the Serie A transfer window.

As Inter Milan continue to reshape their squad under Cristian Chivu, reinforcing the defence remains one of the club's top priorities.

Whether the final choice is Chalobah, Alaba or Lucumí, the Nerazzurri are determined to add another high-quality defender before the new campaign begins.
