Inter Milan plan squad overhaul as Chivu shapes future

Inter Milan between trophies within reach and a squad already evolving

Inter Milan are still chasing two major prizes: the Serie A title, now within touching distance, and the Coppa Italia, with the final set for May 13. 

Yet behind the scenes, the club’s leadership is already sketching out the blueprint for next season, defining the core of Cristian Chivu’s squad.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport via Fcinter1908, several names are emerging as pillars of the future. 

Diouf is finally beginning to show his potential, proving it again with his impact off the bench in the Coppa Italia semifinal against Como. 

The same goes for Sucic, who decided the clash against Cesc Fabregas’ side with a stunning goal. Josep Martinez is also earning confirmation as the second-choice goalkeeper for next season.

Nicolò Barella, meanwhile, has bounced back brilliantly after his disappointment with the national team. 

Then there’s Manuel Akanji, whose permanent signing will be triggered automatically once the Scudetto is mathematically secured, and Denzel Dumfries, who has returned to being decisive after recovering from ankle surgery. All of them are highly likely to remain part of Chivu’s project moving forward.

Uncertainty surrounds key names and looming departures

For others, however, the outlook is far less certain.

The biggest question mark hangs over Alessandro Bastoni. In the last two matches between Serie A and Coppa Italia, Inter Milan have shown they can cope even without the defender. But whether Barcelona will make a decisive move remains unclear. 

The player himself is intrigued by the idea of a new experience away from Inter Milan, yet the club’s management doubts whether the Spanish giants can meet the financial demands. For now, everything remains open.

Then come the expected departures and expiring contracts. Deals for Yann Sommer, Francesco Acerbi, Matteo Darmian, and Henrikh Mkhitaryan are not set to be renewed. 

Stefan de Vrij’s situation is still undecided: if he agrees to halve his salary from around €4 million (£3.44 million) per season, he could still earn an extension.

Finally, players like Luis Henrique and Davide Frattesi are also edging toward the exit door, should suitable offers arrive. 

The Brazilian saw increased playing time due to Dumfries’ absence, but with the Dutchman fit again, his role would likely shrink. 

Frattesi, on the other hand, has endured a quiet season and appears to have reached the end of his journey with Inter Milan.

So, amid numerous potential farewells, a cluster of expiring deals, and clear ambitions, Inter Milan are already building their future well in advance—quietly reshaping the squad that will carry Chivu’s vision forward.
