Inter Milan coach is evaluating his attacking options as injuries and form spark a selection dilemma ahead of the Olimpico showdown

Inter Milan are preparing for one of their toughest tests of the season — the trip to Rome on Saturday night at 20:45 CEST — and coach Cristian Chivu has more than one tempting decision to make in attack.

According to Sky Sport via Fcinter1908, the manager is seriously considering his options as several key players return from international duty. “Akanji is back, followed by Bastoni, Zielinski, Sucic, Dumfries, and De Vrij. The others will return tomorrow,” reported the network’s correspondent from Appiano Gentile earlier today.

Among the most anticipated returns is that of Lautaro Martínez, fresh off a brilliant international break capped by a brace.

The Argentine striker is pushing hard to start against Roma and could be ready to lead the line if he passes the final fitness tests.

However, with Marcus Thuram still not fully recovered, Chivu could be tempted to turn to youth once again.

The name on everyone’s lips is Pio Esposito, the 18-year-old forward who continues to impress both in training and in recent matches. His energy, confidence, and ability to combine physical strength with clinical finishing make him a serious candidate for a starting spot.

A tempting trio of choices up front

Chivu is reportedly weighing three main combinations for the Olimpico clash:

Lautaro with Bonny, pairing experience with power;

Lautaro with Pio Esposito, blending leadership and youthful enthusiasm;

or even a bold Pio Esposito–Bonny duo, which would mark another strong vote of confidence in the Nerazzurri’s new generation.

The final decision will likely come only after the next few training sessions at Appiano Gentile, where Chivu and his staff will assess Lautaro’s condition and Thuram’s recovery timeline.

Pio Esposito, the rising star

For Chivu, the temptation is clear. Pio Esposito has become one of the brightest revelations of the season, already earning praise from teammates and fans alike for his composure and work rate.

His recent performances have fueled talk that he could soon become a regular starter, especially if he continues to deliver in high-pressure situations.

Saturday’s match could thus mark another important step in his rapid rise — and a major tactical statement from Chivu, who isn’t afraid to trust young talent even in decisive Serie A fixtures.

Whatever the choice, Roma–Inter Milan promises intensity, emotion, and perhaps a glimpse into Inter Milan’s future — one where youth and experience continue to intertwine under Chivu’s bold leadership.
