Dumfries offered to Barcelona as Inter Milan await late decision

Barcelona are considering Dumfries, offered by agent Jorge Mendes, but haven’t acted yet. His clause allows a move until the end of July
The future of Denzel Dumfries is becoming a source of concern for Inter Milan. The player’s contract contains a clause that would allow him to leave the Nerazzurri for €25 million (£21 million), to be paid in a single installment by the end of July.
Barcelona, under new coach Hansi Flick, are closely monitoring the situation. The recent transfer meeting between Barcelona and Jorge Mendes wasn’t a routine update: the name Denzel Dumfries emerged strongly in negotiations.
Now represented by Mendes, Dumfries was proposed to the Catalan club, with the agent taking advantage of the release clause that drops to €25 million (£21 million) until the end of the month.
Barcelona hesitate despite Dumfries being a perfect fit for Flick’s system
Flick reportedly appreciates the Dutch full-back, but the club currently has other priorities — especially signing an attacking winger — and the overall transfer puzzle remains incomplete.
Just over a week remains for a final decision. Dumfries is reportedly fully open to the move and would sign immediately.
His name has been linked to Barcelona for several weeks. In the early stages of planning, the club had already outlined the need for a powerful full-back capable of covering the entire flank.
They also considered Jeremie Frimpong, who has since joined Liverpool for around €40 million (£34 million).
Preliminary work on Dumfries has already been done: technical assessments, data gathering — but no concrete steps.
His profile matches their needs exactly, yet issues related to registering new players and a focus on attacking options have pushed this opportunity down the priority list.
From Italy, the message is clear: Inter Milan believe Dumfries will leave before the end of July. Currently, Barcelona and Manchester City appear to be the most interested clubs. Any move is expected to materialize in the final days of the month.

In the meantime, Inter Milan are already evaluating possible replacements. Dumfries’ salary would be manageable for Barcelona, and his attributes offer something different from their current options.
It’s also worth noting that Dumfries left a strong impression the last time Inter Milan faced Barcelona in Europe.
In the Champions League group stage, he scored twice in the first leg — goals that proved decisive in eliminating the Catalan side.
Despite that, Barcelona currently see the right-back role as covered by Jules Koundé. Still, doubts linger about the alternatives. Héctor Fort had limited playing time last season, while in key moments, Flick opted to deploy Eric García on the right.
The internal debate now is this: can their current full-backs be improved upon? The sense around Europe is that top clubs are investing heavily in modern full-backs — a role that’s becoming ever more crucial.
Dumfries remains a real opportunity. But, as often with Barcelona in recent years, financial reality and managerial complexity may once again require extra caution.
