Holding up play, relieving pressure: the value of Inter Milan’s lone-striker solution

Inter Milan’s forwards remain consistently effective, but one key tactical pattern highlights the growing importance of Pio Esposito.

However, one statistic stands out regarding a particular solution adopted by the Nerazzurri coach. As revealed by Corriere dello Sport via Fcinter1908:

“Both the Toro and the Azzurro know better than their two strike partners how to play with their back to goal, protect the ball, and allow the team to push forward. Supporting this observation is the fact that Esposito is the Inter Milan striker who has spent the most time playing without another natural forward alongside him.

This has happened for a total of 36 minutes across two matches. And the most significant instance came against Roma.

Inter Milan were struggling against the pressure from the Giallorossi, who were chasing an equaliser. But by giving the ball to their young striker, the team could breathe: he would either hold onto the ball or earn a foul.

The only other lone forward so far has been Bonny, for just 14 minutes in total—and always with the result already secured, not while the match was still in the balance.”
