History, momentum, and a flurry of decisive facts shape a pivotal Matchday Six clash

The Champions League returns, and Inter Milan arrive with a suitcase packed with confidence.

After defeating Ajax, Slavia Praha, Union SG and Kairat Almaty, plus a bump at home against Atletico Madrid, Cristian Chivu’s squad now prepares for a defining night against Liverpool on Tuesday, 9 December at 21:00 CET at San Siro. The fixture is part of Matchday Six of the League Phase.

This will be the seventh official meeting between Inter Milan and Liverpool, a pairing that has produced storylines carved deep into European football’s archives.

A walk through their shared history

Their first clash dates back to the 1964/65 European Cup semifinal. At Anfield, Liverpool took a 3-1 win, despite Sandro Mazzola momentarily restoring balance.

The return leg in Milan sprouted into Inter Milan folklore: a fierce 3-0 comeback, with early strikes from Corso and Peirò followed by Facchetti’s decisive goal. That triumph carried Inter Milan into the final, where Herrera’s team retained the European title by beating Benfica.

History, momentum, and a flurry of decisive facts shape a pivotal Matchday Six clash.

Fast-forward to the 2007/08 Round of 16. At Anfield, a stubborn Inter Milan held out until late goals from Kuyt and Gerrard, after playing with ten men from the 30th minute due to Materazzi’s disputed dismissal. The return leg at San Siro buzzed with intensity, yet Torres sealed Liverpool’s 1-0 win and the tie.

Their most recent duel came in 2021/22. Liverpool claimed the first leg at San Siro with strikes from Firmino and Salah in the final quarter of an hour.

Inter Milan responded bravely in the return leg at Anfield, where Lautaro Martínez unleashed a stunning goal that delivered Inter Milan their first-ever victory on that ground. Reduced to ten men, they fell just short of advancing.
