Cristian Chivu’s philosophy is becoming clearer — starting from Inter Milan’s defensive revolution and rising intensity

Cristian Chivu’s ideas and tactical philosophy are becoming increasingly evident at Inter Milan. The team’s recent performances clearly show the direction in which the new coach intends to take his side.

Inter Milan, now truly looking upward, does so in every sense,” writes La Gazzetta dello Sport via Fcinter1908

“They’re looking ahead to Roma and Napoli — both at the top of the table and next on the fixture list — with a combative spirit. But they’re also looking up on the pitch, driven by a new energy that pushes them higher and closer to the opponent’s goal. It’s not only about league position — it’s about posture.

Chivu’s Inter Milan has elevated everything: the average position, the tempo, and the aggression level for much of the match.”

What stands out most is the defensive transformation, where the foundations of Chivu’s revolution are clearly visible. The back three in front of Sommer (or Martinez) now play bolder and higher than ever before.

On average, compared to last season, Inter Milan’s defensive line sits almost eight meters further up the pitch — a massive tactical shift by Serie A standards and a difficult adjustment for a unit accustomed to the same movements for four years.

A higher line, a bolder mindset

In 2024/25, Inter Milan’s defensive line averaged 26.8 meters from goal; now, under Chivu, it has risen to 34.7 meters. That’s a 7.9-meter leap, an extraordinary figure that marks a new era in how Inter Milan defends and attacks.

But Chivu isn’t satisfied yet. At Appiano Gentile, training sessions are focused on pushing this high line even further.

The Romanian coach believes his starting trio — Akanji, Acerbi, and Bastoni — can become even more aggressive and cohesive, taking collective defending to new heights.

He also trusts the depth behind them: De Vrij, Carlos Augusto, and especially Bisseck, whose physical presence and proactive mindset make him perfectly suited for Chivu’s high-line approach.

Building Inter Milan’s new identity

The transformation reflects Chivu’s broader vision: a more assertive Inter Milan, pressing high, playing vertically, and dictating the rhythm of matches.

It’s not just about defending further from goal — it’s about controlling the game through positioning, bravery, and intensity.

If the defensive line is the foundation of this new Inter Milan, then its height is also a symbol: this team is learning to live — and thrive — closer to its ambitions.
