Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni reveals Chivu approached Walter Samuel for a role at Inter Milan, but "The Wall" will remain with the Albiceleste

Cristian Chivu was officially appointed today as the new head coach of Inter Milan. While the former defender begins shaping his plans for the new season, one aspect remains undecided: the composition of his coaching staff.

In recent hours, rumors emerged about the possible return of Walter Samuel, Chivu’s former teammate and longtime friend, to the club.

Speaking on the matter, Argentina national team manager Lionel Scaloni confirmed the contact between the two:

“As for Walter, yes — there was a call from Chivu, his friend and former teammate, asking him to join the coaching staff at Inter Milan.

Walter greatly appreciated the gesture and the offer from the club that means so much to him, the one where he built his entire playing career,” Scaloni said.

Samuel declines Inter Milan offer out of loyalty to Argentina project

Despite the sentimental value and the professional opportunity, Samuel ultimately declined the offer.

“However, he has a commitment with us here in the national team and decided to honor it.

That says a lot about him: it’s a sign of affection, great professionalism, and I personally thank him for that. Of course, it hurts him deeply not to be able to return to Inter Milan — it weighs on his heart — but that’s how things are. As far as we’re concerned, the matter is closed.”

Samuel has been a key figure in Argentina’s coaching setup, contributing significantly to their World Cup-winning campaign in 2022.

His loyalty and sense of duty have been praised by the entire Albiceleste staff.
