The French defender is at the center of transfer rumors, but letting go of such experience could be a risky move for Inter Milan

The French defender has become the subject of numerous transfer rumors, but would it really make sense to give up on a player like him?

In the whirlwind of transfer news surrounding Inter Milan, Benjamin Pavard has also been mentioned.

The French defender, caught between too many injuries and some episodes not particularly appreciated by the Nerazzurri environment (such as playing padel while unavailable), no longer seems untouchable, and more than a few fans have spoken in favor of his departure. But would it really make sense to let go of such a player? Let’s analyze the situation from both a technical and economic perspective.

From a footballing standpoint, we are talking about a player of undeniable value, who won a World Cup as a starter with France and boasts significant international experience at the highest level.

At 29, he is in the prime of his career and, with Inter Milan seeking to rejuvenate their defensive line, he would represent a pillar on which to build. In short, there is no doubt about Pavard’s quality.

Between technical value and financial weight, the Pavard case is complex

That said, the Frenchman has never been an absolute guarantee in terms of fitness: both in his first and second seasons with the Nerazzurri, he played only 23 out of 38 league games, and he recently missed almost the entire Club World Cup. Too many absences for a supposed cornerstone.

The French defender is at the center of transfer rumors, but letting go of such experience could be a risky move for Inter Milan.

From an economic perspective, meanwhile, the former Bayern Munich defender “weighs” about 13 million euros (£11 million) per season, and his remaining book value is around 20 million euros (£17 million): any sale below that figure would mean a capital loss.

Selling him for 25 to 30 million euros (£21-26 million), moreover, would not provide the funds needed to find a top-level replacement, considering current market prices, forcing the club to target less established profiles with far inferior résumés, or even pure gambles.

At that point, the risk would outweigh the reward: unless an irresistible offer comes in — which is not currently the case — it would make more sense to keep things as they are. Before parting ways with someone like Pavard, in conclusion, one should think more than twice.
