Inter Milan prepare for a major defensive rebuild, with multiple departures and key reinforcements already in focus

While the current season is still unfolding, Inter Milan are already sketching the blueprint for next year and the defensive department sits at the heart of the redesign.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport via Fcinter1908, up to four departures could reshape the back line, marking the end of a cycle for several experienced figures.

End of the cycle for veterans

Inter Milan prepare for a major defensive rebuild, with multiple departures and key reinforcements already in focus.

The first changes will come naturally, as contracts run their course.

Francesco Acerbi is nearing the end of his deal and, at this stage of his career, has slipped down the hierarchy, especially with Manuel Akanji now leading the defence.

A similar farewell is expected for Matteo Darmian, whose versatility has long been an asset but whose role has gradually faded behind Yann Bisseck.

The future of Stefan de Vrij remains uncertain. Slightly younger than his teammates but no longer central to the project, he appears closer to leaving than staying.

There is also a question mark between the posts. Yann Sommer could see his time as first-choice goalkeeper come to an end, with age beginning to impact consistency and reflexes.

Vicario leads the new era

Inter Milan, however, are not waiting idly.

The club have already identified their preferred successor in goal: Guglielmo Vicario.

A long-term target, he could step in as the new number one, with the possibility of Sommer remaining as an experienced backup still on the table.

The defensive rebuild itself will require a more delicate approach. The aim is to lower the average age without dismantling the structure, blending youth with players ready to handle the intensity of San Siro.

Solet, Ordoñez and a new generation

Among the profiles under consideration, Joel Ordoñez of Club Brugge stands out for his physical presence and early European experience.

Another strong candidate is Oumar Solet, currently impressing at Udinese.

His versatility and physicality make him an ideal fit, and with off-field issues potentially resolved, Inter Milan could reignite their interest with a concrete offer.

A more developmental option is Tarik Muharemovic of Sassuolo, valued for his natural left foot and tactical flexibility.

Bastoni: the name that changes everything

Hovering over all plans is the future of Alessandro Bastoni.

A cornerstone of the current system, yet also a potential key to financing the entire rebuild. Interest from top clubs like Barcelona is real, and a major offer could force Inter Milan into a difficult decision.

Losing Bastoni would not just be a transfer, it would reshape the entire defensive project, possibly even prompting a tactical shift under Cristian Chivu.

This is more than a refresh, it’s a transformation in motion.

Inter Milan are trying to walk a fine line: lowering the age, raising the ceiling, and doing it all without losing balance.

A delicate operation, where every move could ripple through the entire structure of the team.
