A dramatic finale in Verona sees Inter Milan claim a precious victory thanks to a 94th-minute own goal, keeping Chivu’s side just one point behind Napoli

The wind often changes direction and strength, carrying with it the ebb and flow of luck. Over the rain-soaked Bentegodi in Verona, Cristian Chivu’s Inter Milan rode a benevolent gust just when everything seemed written, bringing them within one point of Napoli at the top.

Against Zanetti’s Verona, the draw seemed all but sealed before Frese’s 94th-minute own goal literally handed the three points to the Nerazzurri.

Chivu’s team started with their usual determined attitude, taking control of the game early and dictating its tempo.

That dominance was rewarded with a stunning goal from Piotr Zielinski, who connected beautifully with a Calhanoglu corner to volley the ball into the top corner from outside the box.

It looked like the same familiar script of this season — Inter Milan in full control and ready to close it out at any moment.

From control to chaos: Inter Milan’s recurring “blackout”

Yet Verona, a traditionally tough ground, proved far trickier than expected. Once again, that recurring ghost with an English name — “blackout” — returned to haunt Chivu’s side.

After the opening goal, despite Chivu’s tactical directions, Inter Milan appeared complacent, less aggressive, even a bit careless.

That attitude didn’t pay off: Hellas found the equalizer through Giovane and nearly took the lead before halftime when Orban struck the post.

The match then shifted into a much more physical, nervous midfield battle — a style that suited Zanetti’s men perfectly. Verona held their ground well, putting Inter Milan under real pressure at times.

But luck turned Nerazzurri blue again in stoppage time: Frese’s own goal at the 94th minute rewarded Chivu’s persistence, giving Inter Milan a hard-fought win, a calm Sunday, and a message to both Napoli and the rest of Serie A — especially ahead of Milan–Roma tonight and Wednesday’s Champions League clash with Kairat.

Luis Henrique once again showed he’s not yet ready to challenge Dumfries for the right flank. When the Dutchman came on, the difference was clear. The Brazilian missed his chance to impress Chivu.

Among the strikers, it was a dull afternoon: Bonny struggled, and so did Lautaro Martinez, who hasn’t scored in four league matches. Constant travel and non-stop appearances seem to be taking their toll.

Still, as Chivu himself said, in a league with no true master, sometimes victories come this way — by persistence and a bit of fortune.

Against Lazio next Sunday, Inter Milan will have another chance to make a statement before the international break.
