Polish midfielder set to start against AC Milan

Piotr Zielinski has become one of the pillars of Cristian Chivu’s Inter Milan, and he is expected to start in tomorrow’s highly anticipated derby against AC Milan.

As highlighted by La Gazzetta dello Sport via Fcinter1908, the numbers tell the story clearly.

During his first season with Inter Milan, Zielinski played 971 minutes in Serie A. This season, with the campaign entering its final stretch, he has already reached 1,355 minutes.

At the beginning of last summer, his future in Milan looked uncertain. The Polish midfielder was considered close to surplus, one of the high salaries on the wage bill with a contract worth around €4 million per year.

Now, however, he has become one of the most reliable options available to Chivu, especially as Inter Milan prepare for a crucial derby where they hope to halt Milan’s late push in the title race.

From doubts to one of Chivu’s most trusted players

The change in perception around Zielinski has been remarkable. In 2025, Inter Milan had significant doubts about the midfielder and even invested in younger alternatives such as Petar Sucic and Andy Diouf.

The club had also pursued Manu Kone, who could have taken a starting role in midfield.

Instead, Zielinski quietly worked his way back into contention. After missing the FIFA Club World Cup due to injury, Chivu noticed during training that the midfielder had lost confidence and sharpness.

The coach’s first request was simple: regain top physical condition and ignore the transfer rumors linking him with a move to Saudi Arabia.

Step by step, Zielinski rediscovered his rhythm. Initially filling spaces left by Hakan Calhanoglu and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, he eventually became one of the coach’s most trusted players, capable of performing both as a mezzala and as a deep-lying playmaker.

Derby motivation and National team form

The midfielder who appeared faded during the final season under Simone Inzaghi has now rediscovered the level that once made him a Serie A champion during his years in Naples.

His resurgence also vindicates the decision by Inter Milan executives Giuseppe Marotta and Piero Ausilio to sign him on a free transfer in early 2024.

The improvement has not gone unnoticed in Poland either. Journalists following the national team have reportedly said they have rarely seen Zielinski in such strong form.

For Poland, still fighting to secure qualification for the next World Cup through upcoming playoffs, the return of one of their key stars is an encouraging sign.

As for Inter Milan, Zielinski’s role in the derby could be decisive. Chivu must still decide between Calhanoglu and Mkhitaryan in midfield, but regardless of the final lineup, one certainty remains: Zielinski will be there, ready to influence one of the most important matches of the season.
