Inter Milan coach reflects on the Dortmund victory and the team’s growth

Cristian Chivu spoke to Sky Sport via Fcinter1908 after the Champions League clash between Borussia Dortmund and Inter Milan, a match valid for the eighth round of the 2025/26 league phase.

Following Inter Milan’s 2–0 victory in Germany, the Nerazzurri coach offered a wide-ranging analysis of the performance, the team’s mentality and individual contributions.

Balance, growth and confidence for Inter Milan

“We got what we deserved,” Chivu said. “There’s no point looking back at what we didn’t do, but rather taking pride in what we achieved.

It wasn’t easy, not even tonight in this stadium, against this team and with the energy their fans give them.”

Chivu praised his side’s maturity but also highlighted areas for improvement.

“We played a serious, mature match. In my opinion, we could have shown more hunger and more sharpness in the first half, especially in the situations we created when attacking their defensive line.

We paid a bit for some superficial moments. Still, we’re happy, because this team has been working very hard. Over the last two months, the growth has been exponential. A result like this can give a lot of self-belief and confidence.”

From Mourinho talk to Dimarco’s rise

Asked about the possibility of facing José Mourinho in the next round, Chivu quickly shifted focus.

“Right now, the only idea in my mind is facing Nicola on Sunday. For me, that’s the most important match of the season.

We’re staying here tonight, traveling tomorrow, training again, and we always think about the next game, because the next one is always the most important.”

On Federico Dimarco’s continued development, Chivu preferred to let the player speak for himself.

“You should ask him. We’re very happy with how he started the season, with the mentality he had then and still has now.

He wants to work hard and be decisive. Thankfully, he has always had quality and has always shown it. Today we’re enjoying a mature, complete player who gives us a huge hand, and we’re very pleased with what he’s doing.”

Humility as the key word at Inter Milan for Chivu

Chivu also addressed the idea of Inter Milan wearing “two different outfits” between Serie A and the Champions League.

“The credit goes to these players for immediately embracing what we asked of them and what we tried to bring back. I think the word humility is the key to everything that happens in this group and in this dressing room.”

He continued by praising the squad’s depth and mentality.

“These are 25 players who try to do everything they can to be protagonists, because they know they’ll all get chances to step up and help the team.

Tonight I’d also like to highlight Yann Sommer, Luis Henrique, and Andy Diouf. Diouf came on with patience, worked well, didn’t complain, understood where he is and how difficult it is to wear this shirt, with all the expectations that come with Inter Milan.”

Chivu concluded with a message about standards and identity.

“He came on with the right spirit, I’m happy he managed to score and unlock himself. He has to continue like this, and we will continue like this too.

We’ve reached an important level of maturity, where work always comes first, humility is always there, regardless of the opponent. You can win or lose, but what we must never lose is our attitude and our mentality.”
