Inter Milan have identified Tottenham Hotspur defender Djed Spence as their leading target to reinforce the right side of Cristian Chivu's squad following the departure of Denzel Dumfries.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the 24-year-old English full-back has climbed to the top of the Nerazzurri's shortlist, with both the club and the player reportedly interested in making the move happen during this summer's transfer window.

Spence open to Inter Milan move

One of the biggest factors working in Inter Milan's favour is the player's willingness to join the Serie A champions.

Tottenham full-back Djed Spence has emerged as Inter Milan's preferred option to strengthen the right wing, with the player reportedly open to a move to Serie A.

The report claims Spence has indirectly made it known that he would welcome a move to Milan.

Having previously spent time in Italy during his loan spell with Genoa, the Englishman is said to have retained a positive impression of the country and would be happy to return, this time to one of Europe's biggest clubs.

The opportunity to compete in the UEFA Champions League is also believed to be a major attraction.

While Tottenham begin a new era under their current project, Inter Milan can offer regular European football and the chance to compete for major trophies, an opportunity that strongly appeals to the defender after an impressive Club World Cup campaign.

Chivu values Spence's versatility

Cristian Chivu reportedly sees Spence as an ideal fit for his tactical system.

In Inter Milan's preferred 3-5-2 formation, the English full-back would naturally operate on the right flank but also has the versatility to play on the left when required, giving Chivu greater tactical flexibility throughout the season.

Known for his pace, athleticism and ability to contribute in both defence and attack, Spence possesses many of the qualities Inter Milan are looking for as they reshape the squad following Dumfries' exit.

The remaining challenge is financial.

Inter Milan's directors must now find an agreement with Tottenham while working within the club's transfer budget and ownership guidelines. Negotiations are expected to intensify in the coming days as the Nerazzurri attempt to secure one of Chivu's priority targets before the new season begins.

If talks progress as expected, Djed Spence could soon become one of the headline signings of Inter Milan's summer rebuild.
