The Inter Milan defender explains his decision not to accept the National Team call-up in a heartfelt Instagram post

Inter Milan defender Francesco Acerbi has decided to step back from the Italian national team, announcing his decision through an emotional and candid Instagram post.

The 36-year-old centre-back made it clear that the decision was not taken lightly, but stemmed from recent developments and a need for self-respect.

“After deep reflection, I communicated today to the coach that I will not accept the call-up to the national team,” wrote Acerbi. “This is not a decision I made lightly, because wearing the Azzurri shirt has always been an honor and a source of pride for me.”

Acerbi emphasized that his choice was not driven by anger or disappointment from club-level events, such as Inter Milan's recent Champions League final loss, but rather by a matter of principle and emotional clarity.

Acerbi: “I won’t stay where I’m no longer truly wanted”

“However, I believe that, in light of recent events, the conditions do not currently exist to continue this journey peacefully,” he explained. “I’m not looking for excuses or special treatment, but I do demand respect.”

The veteran defender pointedly suggested that the respect he expects was lacking from key figures within the National Team setup, implying a breakdown in trust with head coach Luciano Spalletti.

“If that respect is missing from someone who should be leading a group, then I prefer to step aside,” Acerbi wrote.

“I’m not someone who clings to a call-up: I’ve always given everything, but I won’t remain where I’m no longer truly wanted. It’s clear I’m not part of the coach’s project.”

Despite stepping away, Acerbi made sure to clarify that his decision is not permanent and not made out of bitterness.

“This is my decision, and as I told the coach this morning, it’s not final. It’s not made out of anger, and certainly not because of ‘depression’ from a lost Champions League final, but simply from a need to take a step back.”

He concluded his message with a gesture of support: “I wish the best to the National Team and my teammates.

I will continue to cheer for them with the same passion I have always shown on the pitch.”

Acerbi’s words underline the emotional and personal weight behind stepping away from representing Italy—a move that has sparked debate and reflection among fans and pundits alike.
