Chivu applauds Inter Milan spirit after victory over Lecce

Esposito’s decisive strike earns Inter Milan a crucial win, with Chivu highlighting effort and maturity

Inter Milan secured a vital 1-0 victory over Lecce in the rescheduled Serie A matchday 16 at San Siro. 

Facing a well-organized and solid Lecce side, the Nerazzurri had to fight for every chance. In the second half, the decisive moment came courtesy of Pio Esposito, whose goal secured three points and allowed Inter Milan to end the first half of the season in first place.

Coach praises Esposito’s growth and the squad’s commitment in a tight fixture

After the match, Cristian Chivu shared his thoughts:

“I’ve known Pio Esposito for seven years. He was a small boy, barely chest-high. We practically grew up together. I know him well, his family, his ambition, his journey through the youth sector. He was my captain in Inter Milan Primavera, and I’m happy for him, just as I am for the whole team.”

Chivu acknowledged the difficulty of the match:

“Today was really tough. I expected a difficult game. After a high-intensity match on Sunday against Napoli, playing another game in 72 hours is complex. 

But I saw the team’s attitude: despite difficulties finding rhythm and clarity, they believed until the end. They left their soul and heart on the pitch to secure the victory.”

The coach also reflected on his approach to management:

“I don’t coach for my conscience, I coach based on what I see in the players’ eyes. Sometimes I make decisions that might seem unusual, but my goal is to build the next five months of the season, not justify every choice. 

Winning the semi-title of winter champion in my career means nothing. What counts is reaching May, knowing we are competitive. This will be a point-by-point battle until the end.”

Trusting the players

Chivu highlighted his confidence in the squad:

“Even as a player, going to training camps doesn’t guarantee wins. What’s needed is clarity and awareness. I trust my players, their maturity, and I’m happy with how they commit every day despite difficulties.”
