Cristian Chivu becomes Inter Milan’s new head coach after leaving Parma—debut in the USA against Monterrey in the Club World Cup
Cristian Chivu experienced his first intense day as Inter Milan’s head coach yesterday, staying at the club headquarters from early morning until late evening to meet with the management and define next steps.
The Romanian coach, succeeding Simone Inzaghi, held talks with president Beppe Marotta and sporting director Piero Ausilio regarding the transfer market, the upcoming Club World Cup, and the formation of his new technical staff, which is still being finalized.
The official announcement is expected on Monday, when Chivu returns to Parma to formally terminate his contract—originally set to expire on June 30.
The signature in front of the players’ union will officially free him from his deal with the Emilia club, allowing him to sign a two-year contract with Inter Milan worth €2.5 million (£2.12 million).
Immediately afterward, Chivu will be at Appiano Gentile to lead his first training session with the few players not currently involved with their national teams.

The squad is set to depart for Los Angeles on June 11 for the FIFA Club World Cup. Their first match is scheduled for June 18 against Monterrey at UCLA, a prestigious venue in the heart of American collegiate sports.
Tactical continuity and key player calls ahead of Club World Cup
Chivu will only have access to the full squad in California, with limited time to implement his tactics and integrate new arrivals. For this reason, he is expected to maintain Simone Inzaghi’s formation initially, introducing changes gradually.
According to La Gazzetta via Fcinter1908.it, Chivu plans to personally call the team’s senior players to reassure them about the continuity of the project.
In California, some of the new signings will be tested: Sucic may take over midfield duties from Barella or Mkhitaryan, while Luis Henrique will offer new options on the flank. There will also be a close eye on Pio Esposito, who is regaining fitness and may receive special attention from Chivu, who was among the first to recognize his potential in Inter Milan’s youth setup.
As for the staff, Mario Cecchi—long-time assistant to Inzaghi—will remain to ensure continuity.
Meanwhile, Stefano Rapetti is emerging as a leading candidate for head of athletic preparation. Formerly part of José Mourinho’s staff at Inter Milan, Roma, and Fenerbahce, his return would signal a nod to tradition, consistency, and experience.
