Fabrizio Romano explains the situation: Inter Milan is already scouting options for 2026, but Josep Martinez’s future is still open

As reported in recent days, Inter Milan have officially started their search for the goalkeeper of the future.

The club is moving early, assessing several profiles with a view to the summer of 2026, laying the groundwork for the post-Sommer era.

Fabrizio Romano explains the situation: Inter Milan is already scouting options for 2026, but Josep Martinez’s future is still open.

However, this does not directly affect Josep Martinez’s immediate future. As transfer expert Fabrizio Romano explained on his YouTube channel, the situation is still wide open:

“Will Martinez stay or leave? Inter Milan are tracking goalkeepers for 2026, but it’s not a matter related to Martinez.

He’ll have his chances this season to prove his worth — if he performs well, he can stay and compete with whoever arrives next year. Otherwise, the club will make other decisions. As of now, Inter Milan haven’t made any final calls about him: he hasn’t been ruled out, nor declared the long-term No.1. It’s an evolving situation.”

Focus shifts toward Sommer’s successor

Romano further clarified that the main focus of Inter Milan’s scouting activity is actually Yann Sommer’s position.

Inter Milan are monitoring goalkeepers — including Elia Caprile — for 2026, because Sommer is likely to leave at the end of the season. The club’s attention is more on his potential replacement than on Martinez’s situation.”

In short, Inter Milan are planning ahead, ensuring a seamless transition in one of the most delicate positions on the pitch.

The coming months will be crucial for Martinez to stake his claim, while the management continues to prepare for the future between the posts.
