Inter Milan show courage and quality at the Metropolitano but come away empty-handed despite Zielinski’s equaliser

Inter Milan delivered an impressive performance—brave, energetic and full of quality—inside the tough environment of the Estadio Metropolitano.

Despite their strong showing, the Nerazzurri were unable to secure at least a point against Atlético Madrid.

Inter Milan’s goal came thanks to a perfectly executed one-two between Ange-Yoan Bonny and Piotr Zielinski, with the Polish midfielder finishing off the move for the temporary equaliser. After the match, Zielinski analysed the team’s performance:

“We’re certainly disappointed with how it ended. Losing like this after such a good match always hurts. We knew this was a difficult stadium and that we were facing a very strong opponent, but we played well. We just missed that second goal to close the match, and in the end we conceded the decisive one.

Zielinski: “A strong performance, we just missed the second goal”

I feel good, I always try to improve and give my best for the team. The goal? It was a nice move—Ange played a great ball to finish the one-two—but unfortunately today it wasn’t enough. We’ll bounce back because we’re a great team and we have plenty of matches ahead.

I don’t think we’ll have big problems; we’re an excellent team and we always react. It’s true this is the second defeat in a row, but our performances remain at a high level. We need to be more focused defensively, shoot more, and try to score. With a draw or a win we’d be higher in the standings. We knew it wouldn’t be easy, but we still have three matches to pick up as many points as possible and reach the round of 16.”

This was the first setback for Inter Milan in the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League after opening the campaign with four victories.

Despite the defeat in Madrid, the match showcased plenty of chances and strong overall play.

Defender Yann Bisseck also spoke after the game:

“It can happen—today we didn’t deserve to lose, but football is like that. We have to keep working and hope for a bit more luck. To be honest, we gave everything. With two or three shots they scored twice; it doesn’t feel fair, but that’s football and we must move forward.

I’m happy with the performance because we did our things well. There’s always something to improve, but today I can’t say anything negative about the team. It hurts, I don’t know what else to say. We played a great match—it's not easy to play here.”
