What initially seemed like a minor problem has turned into a longer recovery for Inter Milan’s Denzel Dumfries: here’s why and when he could be back
Denzel Dumfries’ injury did not initially appear serious, yet his recovery times have now stretched out.
The Inter Milan wing-back picked up a problem in his left ankle while with his national team and was forced to leave the training camp.
Early indications had even suggested a possible return between the derby and the match against Atlético Madrid.
Swollen ankle, persistent pain and the new target dates for his comeback
In a video posted by Frattesi on social media during derby week, Dumfries’ swollen ankle was clearly visible. So why have the timelines changed?

Speaking at the Gran Galà del Calcio on Monday, Dumfries himself explained:
“I’m working hard, I want to come back as soon as possible. I hope to recover in two or three weeks.”
Behind the delay is the persistent swelling and pain. Despite standard therapy, the discomfort prevented Dumfries from taking part in recent matches, and he will also miss the upcoming fixtures against Como and Liverpool.
At this point, based on Dumfries’ own words and the club’s assessments, his likely return window is between the Genoa match on 14 December and the Italian Super Cup semifinal against Bologna on 19 December.
