taremi inter

After a very promising start, the Iranian striker failed to make an impact at Inter Milan.

It’s been over nine months since Mehdi Taremi officially became an Inter Milan player. The Iranian striker arrived in Milan on a free transfer from Porto amid high expectations: in four seasons with the Dragões, he had scored 91 goals, establishing himself internationally.

The idea was that Taremi would strengthen Inter Milan’s attack, becoming more than just an alternative to Lautaro Martinez and Marcus Thuram.

However, looking at his performance so far, the project can be called a clear failure: only 3 goals in all competitions — 2 of them from penalties — and an almost nonexistent contribution.

Now, having dropped to the bottom of Inzaghi’s pecking order, an early departure is no longer a far-fetched hypothesis.

A Short-lived impact

And yet, his start at Inter Milan had been very encouraging: immediately available from the first day of pre-season, Taremi had impressed in friendlies, scoring 3 goals in his first 2 matches.

However, the first injury changed everything: after missing the Serie A opener, he fell into a spiral of fear and uncertainty, losing ground not only to Thuram and Lautaro ("ThuLa") but also being overtaken by Arnautovic and Correa.

The applause and excitement of July soon turned into murmurs and then boos.

An inevitable ending

Physical issues worsened his decline, with chronic pubalgia preventing him from training regularly.

Under contract until June 30, 2027, with a €3 million (£2.5 million) yearly salary, Taremi is now a heavy burden for Inter Milan

It’s hard to imagine a turnaround on the pitch, just as it’s unlikely any club would invest in a nearly 33-year-old player who appears to be past his prime.

The free transfer market, which has often been a source of success for Inter Milan, failed this time.
