Despite victory in Germany, direct qualification slips away for Inter Milan’s side
Inter Milan are back to winning ways in the Champions League, but the road ahead remains demanding.
The victory in Dortmund, signed by decisive contributions from Federico Dimarco and Diouf, ended a run of three consecutive European defeats and restored confidence within Cristian Chivu’s squad.
However, the success in Germany was not enough to secure direct qualification for the round of 16.
Inter Milan finish the league phase in tenth place in the expanded group standings, a position that sends them into the playoff round.
Playoff opponents and possible round-of-16 scenarios

In the playoffs, Inter Milan will face one of two opponents: Norwegian side Bodø/Glimt, who finished 23rd, or Benfica, who ended the phase in 24th place and are led by former Inter Milan coach José Mourinho.
Looking further ahead, should Inter Milan advance from the playoffs, the round of 16 would present another major challenge. Their potential opponents at that stage would be either Manchester City or Sporting CP.
All scenarios will be clarified on Friday, when the official draw takes place in Nyon. For Inter Milan, the journey continues: the margin for error is now gone, but the Dortmund win may prove to be the spark that reignites their European campaign.
