Cristian Chivu reflects on the win, squad depth and the road ahead
Inter Milan claimed a crucial 1-0 victory away to Atalanta, sealed by a decisive goal from Lautaro Martínez. Speaking to DAZN via Fcinter1908 after the final whistle, head coach Cristian Chivu shared his thoughts on the match, key decisions and the broader outlook.
The Thuram substitution and match approach
Asked about the decision to replace Thuram before Lautaro’s goal, Chivu explained:
“I’m happy with Thuram’s performance as well. He worked hard, put their defense under pressure and pressed at the right moments. From the bench it looked like he had nothing left, so I brought on Pio. He won the ball back and played Lautaro through on goal.”

Chivu continued:
“I liked the attitude. In the first half we tried to play more football. We’re happy with the result, and you taught me that results often matter, and matter a lot.”
Pio Esposito, Bonny and attacking depth
On the young forwards, Chivu underlined the importance of the entire group:
“We also have Bonny, and he shouldn’t be forgotten. They’ve all settled in very well, the group likes them, they work hard and contribute. We’re pleased to have four strikers of extraordinary quality. They enjoy themselves, they score and they play their part in our season.”
Inter Milan top of the table: nothing taken for granted
Despite closing the year at the top, Chivu struck a cautious tone:
“In football nothing is taken for granted. To be competitive, you have to prove it on the pitch. It’s only December, the first half of the season isn’t even over. The road is long and we want to keep working and stay competitive.”
He added:
“Sometimes we also have to fight against injustices and against those who take everything for granted. We respond blow for blow. It’s important that we always keep our heads high and react to difficulties.”
A word for 2026?
When asked to define a key word for the upcoming year, Chivu smiled:
“There’s still 2025 to finish, four days left. I’ll answer you maybe after the first match of 2026.”
