Inter Milan cruise past River Plate 2-0 to secure top spot in Group E

Goals from Francesco Pio Esposito and Alessandro Bastoni send Inter Milan into the round of 16, where they'll face Fluminense next

Mission accomplished for Cristian Chivu’s Inter Milan: the Italian side secured a convincing 2-0 victory over River Plate to claim the top spot in Group E and seal their place in the round of 16. 

Bastoni and Esposito shine as Inter Milan show strength and depth to reach knockouts

Goals from Francesco Pio Esposito in the first half and Alessandro Bastoni in the second were enough to ensure Inter Milan’s progression as group winners.

The match began with intensity, as both teams fought for dominance in midfield. But it was Inter Milan who broke the deadlock in the 27th minute, when Esposito calmly finished a well-worked move initiated by Valentin Carboni. 

The Italian striker, showing great composure, slotted the ball past the River Plate goalkeeper to give Inter Milan a crucial lead.

In the second half, Inter Milan remained in control, with the defense marshalled superbly by Bastoni. 

The centre-back then doubled the advantage in the 67th minute, rising highest to meet a corner and heading it powerfully into the net. It was a captain’s performance from Bastoni, who led by example throughout the match.

With this result, Inter Milan not only advance to the round of 16 but do so with confidence and momentum. 

Their next challenge comes in the form of Fluminense, who finished second in Group F. The match is set for Monday evening at 9:00 PM CET and promises to be another exciting clash.
