Speaking to DAZN ahead of Inter Milan-Urawa, Cristian Chivu shared thoughts on the pitch conditions, team mentality, and key players like Pio Esposito and Calhanoglu
Speaking to DAZN via Fcinter1908 before Inter Milan-Urawa, Cristian Chivu discussed the match and his expectations:
“How’s the pitch?”
“I’m a coach. I know it’s a synthetic pitch and they’ve probably laid grass over it. It seems to be a regular and good surface to play football on.”
What are you hoping to see from your players in this second match?
“I’m focused on what we do well and the things that can put our opponents in trouble.
I’m paying close attention to our physical and mental condition because we must remember these guys have gone through nine months of battles, playing every three days. It’s never easy to face these kinds of games in late June.
But I see character and pride in them. That makes me happy — I’ve seen intense and energetic training sessions. They’re giving everything they have left, even if it’s not much, and they try to push beyond their limits.”

Chivu on Pio Esposito: “We grew up together — he’s matured a lot”
On Pio Esposito:
“I’ve found Pio more mature. I met him as a young boy in the U14s, he was about 13 and a half, and we basically grew up together.
Then I had the pleasure of coaching him in the Primavera, where he became my captain and made a real difference at the end of the season.
He’s had two excellent seasons in Serie B, growing both as a player and a person. I’m happy to see him again, and he’s even more motivated and focused. He’s only been training for two days now after a minor knee issue — I really can’t wait to see him on the pitch.”
On Calhanoglu:
“He’s one of the leaders of this group, and you can tell. Even though he’s not on the field with us, the way he carries himself and his presence within the squad are very important.
He’s a bit worried about the injury, but he’s working hard to recover as quickly as possible. As for the transfer rumors, I haven’t had the chance to speak with him about it, so I don’t know what’s true.
What I do see is his full commitment to the group and to this tournament. He wants to be back soon to help the team.”
